PepsiCo UK factory jobs at risk

Workers at four Walkers Crisps factories in the UK are at risk of losing their jobs as PepsiCo is consulting on restructuring proposals.

According to LeicestershireLive, 560 PepsiCo jobs are at risk. Around 250 of the posts could be at the flagship Walkers site in Leicester.

Just Food has contacted PepsiCo for verification on these figures. In a statement, the US giant said: “We recently told our teams that we will be consulting on proposed changes to our operational structure, affecting a proportion of employees at our snacks manufacturing sites in the UK.

PepsiCo is proposing the changes at its four largest sites in the UK – Leicester, Coventry, Lincoln and Skelmersdale – which together employ 4,500 people, LeicestershireLive reported.

The PepsiCo spokesperson said: “No decisions will be made without first consulting affected employees and their representatives. Our priority is providing support for our people throughout this process.”

The spokesperson added the changes being proposed are “intended to bring our UK sites in line with a different operating structure we have had success with at some of our other international sites”, leading to “better ways of working and increased technical capabilities”.

PepsiCo has made a number of changes to its production network in the US in recent months.

In June, the company halted production at a Frito-Lay processing plant in southern California after five decades of operation.

In February, PepsiCo revealed it was closing a snacks manufacturing plant in New York for its PopCorners brand, where more than 200 employees were expected to lose their jobs.

In May, PepsiCo said it plans to double investment and more than triple output capacity at an under-construction salty snacks plant in Kazakhstan, aiming to produce at full capacity by 2027.
