Turenscape’s “sponge city” concept strives to manage flood risks while honoring the site’s 6,500-year historical significance and its ties to Emperor Fuxi and the Eight Trigrams philosophy. The design solution ingeniously repurposes 860,000 cubic meters of excavated material to create a constellation of 27 functional islands that serve dual purposes — as stormwater management infrastructure and as vibrant public spaces hosting diverse recreational activities. The project’s layered approach integrates advanced water purification systems capable of treating 11,500 tons daily, extensive boardwalk networks connecting cultural experiences, and native vegetation selections inspired by ancient Chinese poetry.
