India’s unemployment rate stays at 5.6% in June 2025


India’s unemployment rate stood at 5.6% in June 2025. It was the same rate in May, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Tuesday.

Unemployment went down in rural areas from 5.1% in May to 4.9% in June. However, in urban areas, it went up from 6.9% in May to 7.1% in June.

In rural India, the jobless rate for those aged 15–29 climbed to 13.8% in June, up from 13.7% in May. In urban areas, youth unemployment rose to 18.8% in May from 17.9% a month earlier.

Both female and male unemployment rate in urban and rural areas combined was recorded at 5.6% in June.

The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), which is an estimate of the number of people actively engaged in the workforce, in the Current Weekly Status (CWS) for all age groups stood at 41.0% in June 2025, down from 41.4% in May. Rural LFPR was higher at 56.9%, while urban LFPR was 50.4%.


LFPR in CWS for male of age 15 years and above in rural and urban areas were respectively 78.1% and 75.0% during June, 2025. LFPR among female of age 15 years and above for rural areas was 35.2% during June, 2025. In urban areas it was 25.2%. This was the third monthly release of India’s labour force data covering both urban and rural areas. Previously, the government published employment data on a quarterly basis for urban regions and annually for both urban and rural areas.
