NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) summoned an urgent meeting on Tuesday with the postholders of Air India and AI Express. DG Fazi Ahmed Kidwai will chair the virtual meet at 3 pm. The meeting has been summoned with AI MD & CEO Campbell Wilson, AI Director of Flight Operations Captain Pankul Mathur, AI Express CEO Aloke Singh, and many others.This comes after several Air India flights reported technical snags, with a few returning and others getting cancelled. Earlier on June 12, the London-bound Air India flight AI-171 carrying 242 passengers and crew members crashed in Ahmedabad. Only one survived the crash, while 29 on the ground died after the aircraft smashed into a medical complex.Sabharwal, along with First Officer Clive Kundar, was commanding the ill-fated flight. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) earlier said that Sabharwal had 8,200 hours of flying experience, Kundar 1,100 hours. At 1.39 pm on June 12, the aircraft departed from the Ahmedabad airport. Soon after take-off, Sabharwal issued a ‘Mayday’ distress call to the Air Traffic Control at Ahmedabad, denoting a full emergency. Within seconds, AI 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, smashed into the medical complex.
