Award-Winning Observatory Designs : snow King Observatory

The Snow King Observatory represents a significant achievement in architectural innovation and public science education. The architectural project was most recently recognized at the 2025 Architizer A+Awards.

Designed through a collaboration between Farmer Payne Architects and GALCZYNSKI, this facility stands out as North America’s first fully accessible public observatory integrated within a ski resort. It is situated at an elevation of 7,808 feet on Wyoming’s Snow King Mountain. The Snow King Observatory’s thoughtful design prioritizes both functionality and environmental sensitivity. The facility features a state-of-the-art one-meter telescope, a 35-seat planetarium, and an auditorium. It also employs dark-sky compliant lighting and energy-efficient construction to minimize its ecological footprint.

The Snow King Observatory’s strategic location in Jackson — a designated International Dark Sky Community — enhances its scientific value by offering optimal conditions for astronomical observation.
