Black-Timber Farmhouse Extensions : shadow barn

Dutch design firm Studioquint has renovated and added an extension to the Shadow Barn in the Netherlands. The design highlights the use of black timber clad in a way that reflects the ‘shadow’ of the existing building. The firm was tapped to add more expansive living areas to the traditional brick farm house.

Oliver Ebben, project architect speaks about the design concept, “Black wooden barn houses are a characteristic element of the local landscape and cultural heritage of the southern part of the Netherlands. Our material choice refers to the traditional building method and at the same time seeks more refinement and contemporary abstraction. In a metaphorical sense, the extension might be seen as an exaggerated shadow of the old farm house.”
